The wines of Bordeaux have been gracing our shores since the stormy marriage of Henry Plantagenet and Aliénor d'Aquitaine in the 12th Century.
They are the quintessence of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The majority require patience and cellaring to realise their true beauty however there are many estates that drink wonderfully in their youth.
Bordeaux is predominantly heralded for its reds, but the dry white wines from the region made from Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, are not to be forgotten, the likes of Domaine de Chevalier and Haut Brion are remarkable. The appellations of Sauternes and Barsac undoubtedly produce some of the finest sweet wines in the world, including the mighty Chateau d'Yquem.
